My Story
From Nutritionist to Registered Acupuncturist
My journey into holistic healing is deeply rooted in my heritage and passion for science.
Growing up in a traditional Cantonese family, health was woven into daily life through nourishing meals and mindful practices. My grandmother and mother would meticulously make nourishing soups - simmering ingredients like 20-year-old Chen Pi (aged, dried tangerine peel), dried conch meat, apricot kernels and fresh, crisp watercress - and teaching me that food is profound medicine. The aromas wafting from the kitchen every morning always woke up my senses, transporting me to a place of comfort and vitality.
Our healing rituals extended beyond the kitchen. At the first sign of tension or a common cold, my grandmother would reach for her smooth porcelain spoon to perform gua sha – a skin scraping technique that helped relieve muscle stiffness and promoted circulation, leaving me feeling refreshed and revitalized. It was like a warm hug for my body, melting away stress and tension.
In addition, my family would join in quiet qi gong exercise with deep breathing to cultivate vitality and maintain balance.
This foundational belief that "food is thy medicine" naturally evolved into a professional pursuit. I recognized that addressing chronic illness required a systemic, evidence-based approach, making the rigorous science of nutrition my top priority. This conviction guided me to pursue a Master of Science in Human Nutrition at UBC and into a dedicated career as a researcher in breast cancer.
During my time in research, my path transformed. I had countless, profound conversations with patients who shared how acupuncture, functional foods, and herbal medicine helped alleviate their physical discomfort, pain, insomnia, and emotional turmoil. Witnessing this powerful bridge between ancient practices and modern healing challenges sparked a revelation. I realized that to truly serve the whole person, I needed to integrate the full spectrum of wisdom I had inherited.
This calling led me to the Tzu Chi Institute of TCM in Vancouver, where I learned to translate the principles behind my family's nourishing soups, gua sha therapy, and qi gong exercise into a complete system of diagnosis and treatment. Today, as both a Registered Acupuncturist and a Nutritionist, I have come full circle. My practice is the fusion of my childhood upbringing and adult education – a unique blend of evidence-based nutrition and timeless Traditional Chinese Medicine wisdom.
I am deeply grateful to all my clients for their trust and opportunities. It is a privilege to walk the paths to wellness with my family, friends and clients everyday.
This year (2026), my grandmother is celebrating her 99th birthday. She is living an active and abundant life, enjoying dim sim lunch and qi gong with friends everyday. I am truly grateful for her wisdom and vibrant energy.
